Elton John used an autocue during Princess Diana’s funeral.
“Candle In The Wind” was sung during the service as a tribute, and the broadcast, which was aired live on television, was expected to captivate hundreds of millions of viewers. For the occasion, Elton had changed the words “Goodbye Norma Jean” to “Goodbye England’s Rose.”
The 72-year-old singer mentioned during an interview at the Royal Academy of Music that because he was so nervous about the performance, he had an autocue set up. “That was the first time for me. I thought, ‘If I sing Goodbye Norma Jean now, they’ll quarter, drown, and hang me.’ It was a precaution,” he said.
