It’s really not easy to be funny via autocue, according to Arjan Lubach.
It is agreed that the success of the show hinges on the way Lubach presents. “He is, of course, also a comedian. His timing is perfect. It’s really not easy to tell jokes in that way, but he has completely mastered the technique.” Lubach’s comedic talent and interpretation of the text are praised. “When he’s interviewed, he has to search for his words. He’s at his best when he prepares carefully and reads from the script. That doesn’t take away from his talent, though, because it’s really not easy to be funny via autocue.”

Elton John used Autocue
Elton John used an autocue during Princess Diana’s funeral.
“Candle In The Wind” was sung during the service as a tribute, and the broadcast, which was aired live on television, was expected to captivate hundreds of millions of viewers. For the occasion, Elton had changed the words “Goodbye Norma Jean” to “Goodbye England’s Rose.”
The 72-year-old singer mentioned during an interview at the Royal Academy of Music that because he was so nervous about the performance, he had an autocue set up. “That was the first time for me. I thought, ‘If I sing Goodbye Norma Jean now, they’ll quarter, drown, and hang me.’ It was a precaution,” he said.

Barack Obama: I have a….. Autocue!
Barack Obama is known as a gifted speaker. After his unexpected victory in Iowa, when he delivered a phenomenal victory speech (see below), he was even compared to Martin Luther King. Few realized that the Democratic presidential candidate used a tried-and-true Hollywood tool during his speech: the autocue. Out of view of the camera, transparent displays were positioned to Obama’s left and right, projecting the text of his speech. As he read the text, he gave the illusion of maintaining constant eye contact with his audience.

Many American speakers use the so-called teleprompter during public appearances. The technology has been used in Hollywood since the 1950s. It was former actor Ronald Reagan who brought it to Washington when he was elected president in 1980. It became known as his “sincerity machine.” He never gave a speech without it!
Thanks to the autocue, Obama’s speech had an unmistakably presidential tone. His choice of words and structure sounded more refined than the improvised remarks of his opponents.
